![]() ![]() ![]() The first great idea in Morrison’s incarnation of the series was playing up the idea that “superheroes” could mean “people who have something terribly wrong with their bodies.” The group’s mainstay is Cliff “Robotman” Steele, a former race-car driver whose brain powers a robot body as he puts it in Morrison’s first episode, he’s a “total amputee.” ![]() The Doom Patrol had been kicking around in one form or another since 1963, a team of superpowered weirdos and outcasts led by a genius in a wheelchair (and yes, that premise has a lot in common with the X-Men, apparently by coincidence). Their “Doom Patrol” run, close to 1,300 pages in all, is collected in this massive hardcover book considered as a single work, its master plan is much more clearly evident. Before Grant Morrison was a huge name in mainstream comic books - the writer of series like “New X-Men,” “All-Star Superman” and the forthcoming “Multiversity” - he was the brilliant weirdo who wrote “Doom Patrol.” Morrison and artist Richard Case took over that fourth-tier superhero series at the beginning of 1989 and spent the next four years driving it through zones of surreal madness that comics had scarcely visited before (and mostly haven’t revisited). ![]()

![]() ![]() Bolstered by a command of Arabic, a fair knowledge of Farsi, and an irrepressible drive that would characterize her more than five decades as a traveler and explorer, Stark spent most of the next four years. In these accounts of her own transformation she brought a growing body of readers not only into exotic locales but also to the brink of metaphysical questions about the meaning of life. 'In the fall of 1928, Freya Stark, a thirty-five-year-old Englishwoman, set out on her first journey to the Middle East. The writings that resulted from her constant travels began as wonder-filled accounts of ancient storybook kingdoms of the Middle East and moved impressively toward a reflective consideration of the differences between a nomadic way of life and the stable urbanity that might have been her lot if she had decided to fit the mold of those around her. During her many years in Iraq, Stark was witness to the rise and fall of the British involvement in the country as well as the early years of. Such a motto defines not only her approach to the world but also the character of the woman herself. Freya Stark first journeyed to Iraq in 1927. Freya Madeline Stark lived for a century, and into that one hundred years she packed a life of extraordinary daring and ingenuity. ![]() ![]() ![]() Only available as part of our 3 for £33 Penguin Clothbound Classics collection. Surface Detail is the longest of the Culture novels and probably one of the most difficult to summarize (it's less convoluted than Excession, though). As I've mentioned in my review of Matter, I recommend reading the books in publication order, but doing so isn't necessary (the previous link also contains some background on the Culture if you're not familiar with this whole business). While newcomers might enjoy this one, you probably need a few Culture books under your belt to get the most out of it (especially if one of the books under your belt is Use of Weapons). Surface Detail isn't an entry level Culture novel. ![]() ![]() ![]() Knowles graduated from Yale University as a member of the class of 1949.
